Description: Cuisine Assembly – Himachali Dham: Celebrating Our Tradition 6 August 2025 On 6th August, the students of St. Edward’s School were treated to a delightful journey into the heart of Himachal Pradesh’s culinary heritage with a special Cuisine Assembly dedicated to Himachali Dham. This traditional feast, a beautiful blend of local flavours and influences from the Kashmiri Wazwan, has been perfected over generations by the Botis, Brahmin cooks who have preserved these recipes through word of mouth. The assembly highlighted the fascinating history behind Himachali Dham. Students learnt that following the Mughal invasion of Chamba, Raja Jaistambh was inspired to prepare this feast as a devotional prasad, honouring the Goddess. The Botis themselves are believed to be descendants of Kusha, son of Lord Rama, adding a sacred dimension to this culinary tradition. The event came alive with a live cooking demonstration, where food was prepared over firewood and charcoal in traditional brass vessels called paltus. A complete village-style rasolu (kitchen area) was recreated on stage, accompanied by folk songs and a theatrical depiction of the cooking process. The assembly concluded with students enjoying a sacred mooda, a traditional Himachali evening snack served in banana-leaf bowls, along with meetha in clay kulhads, experiencing the true taste of tradition. As the assembly beautifully showcased, cuisine is more than just food — it is from Earth to Heart, nourishing the soul and celebrating life. To taste the tradition is to share the blessings, reminding us all that every meal is a sacred bite.
