  • National Level Model Conference of Parties 4 (MCOP-4)
Venue: Vishwa Yuvak Kendra in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi
    Event Date: 23-May-2023
    Description:

St. Edward's School Shimla had the privilege of participating in the esteemed National Level Model Conference of Parties 4 (MCOP-4), organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) India. This conference, held at the Vishwa Yuvak Kendra in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, aimed to provide a platform for young students from all over the country to engage in meaningful discussions, generate innovative ideas, and take concrete actions towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more equitable world.

The journey to MCOP-4 began on May 23, 2023, when Anirudh Thakur from XII-A and Ayaan Singh Bisht from X-A, along with students from other prestigious institutes in Himachal Pradesh, were interviewed by the WWF team. With their exceptional performance, our boys qualified at the state level and were chosen to represent Himachal Pradesh at the national event. Accompanying them as the teacher escort was Ms. Deepika Thakur, whose guidance and support were invaluable throughout the conference.
From July 2 to July 5, MCOP-4 brought together teams from all 28 states and 8 union territories of India. Esteemed members of WWF, along with representatives from UNEP, UNDP, CBD, conservation experts, and environment enthusiasts, delivered insightful lectures on various topics such as biodiversity conservation, sustainable future, Aichi Targets, negotiation and consensus building, formulation of SMART action plans, and the significance of teamwork. The event was further enriched by engaging panel discussions that encouraged diverse perspectives and ideas.
One of the highlights of MCOP-4 was the opportunity for delegates to participate in recreational activities. A nature trail was organized to Sanjay Van, a magnificent ridge forest on the Aravalli Hills. This trail allowed students to witness and appreciate the urban biodiversity of Delhi, encountering a wide array of indigenous and invasive flora and fauna. Moreover, they were fortunate enough to explore the historic Lal Kot, an 8th-century fort, which added a touch of heritage to the experience.
To add a touch of cultural vibrancy, a delightful cultural evening took place on July 4, 2023. Students from different corners of the country showcased their unique cultures and heritage. Our students, led by Ms. Deepika Thakur, mesmerized the audience with a graceful performance of the Nati, a traditional Himachali dance. The enthusiasm and curiosity sparked by their performance were truly remarkable, as many participants expressed their eagerness to learn and perform the Nati themselves.
The MCOP-4 journey does not end with the conference itself; it marks the beginning of a new chapter. Each group, comprising delegates from six states and union territories, is now tasked with implementing their SMART action plans. These plans aim to address critical environmental challenges and promote sustainability in their respective regions. The groups are required to submit their comprehensive reports by January 2024, showcasing the practical outcomes of their efforts.
The experience has enriched our students' knowledge, created lasting memories, and instilled in them a renewed sense of purpose. Armed with their newfound insights and determination, these young leaders are inspired to make a positive impact in their communities and contribute towards a sustainable future.
MCOP-4, organized by WWF India, has truly demonstrated the immense power of youth and the transformative impact that can be achieved when brilliant young minds come together. It has reaffirmed our belief in the potential of the next generation to bring about meaningful change. We look forward to witnessing the remarkable contributions our students will make as they continue their journey as responsible global citizens.
